Gingerbread Houses, Emily Dickinson, Walt Whitman, Sarah Clarkson and Other Holiday Discourse

"A man may make a Remark- In itself- a quiet thing That may furnish the Fuse unto a Spark In dormant nature- lain-  Let us divide- with skill- Let us discourse- with care- Powder exists in Charcoal- Before it exists in Fire-" - Emily Dickinson

Burn out. A word most of current culture relates to. Yet, we do not understand that our Gingerbread houses are spun out of what we also help create. Perhaps the initial ingredients are out of our hands, but the way we flourish our proverbial homes? We have some sway over the sugar and spice. Why would we choose to coat our doors in sticky ketchup (news outlets/ social media)? Why would we want our doors so stuck with information that we can barely open them up on our own? The home we make can become crumbled bits and pieces, when we try so hard to open the door we partially sealed with our own choices. We shake our own core. It can be tough to taste tantalizing sweet sugar underneath layers of tomato paste.

Let us discourse with care.

Evergreen. A word that expresses everlasting hope. A word that can sing beloved Christmas tunes or evoke the sparkling wonder that children are best at expressing."Welcome home," says the body that is nourished and grounded in BEING. The hand on the door, opening to a place of belonging and safety. The squished give of the mattress as it envelops at night. The light of a lamp reflecting the caring of friends, as the knots of isolation slowly become untied. The wreaths symbolizing the spiral of life. The cliches that bring us joy. The tiny, obscure miracles we forget to see, because we are too caught up in our cerebral worlds to honour the tangible Given. Yet, the breaks from ourselves are there, waiting to soothe our unbelief in the Beauty that IS, patiently waiting to give a little cheer with the words, "Welcome home."

Story. What binds us and breaks us. What heals or destroys. The words we choose can bring hope or disaster. The story we tell, no matter how dark or bright, is OURS to give. The calm inside our chaos is a promise of All that Is. "Sharing all our stories of our failures and our glories, even when our hopes got torn, We made it through the storm. And I couldn't ask for more. When I'm down, and I'm lost and I'm tired- When it feels like the whole world is on fire...Even when I feel like a mess, have to take a good look inside me Yes, In the hurts where I find the Holy I guess, I'll never be perfect but I try my best, to remember I'm blessed."- Kelly Clarkson

Charts. Can something so clinical be a balm? How does one reframe a moment? In emotion? In intellect? In spirit? In Body? One piece neglected takes from the whole. Can you smell joy? Can you feel a word? Can spirit be rooted Can a body connect to other realms? Can we meet in the middle? ... A room that had housed a familiar mentor was now the territory of a complete stranger. Like clockwork, almost every month, for 16 years I had met a different set of eyes. Next to the seat was an emotions chart.* Inwardly I cringed. I dismissively thought, "Of course, he knows I have Aspergers Syndrome and gave me a feelings chart. Standard textbook." But I looked into his hope filled eyes that wished to help me, and I softened. I tried to be open. It wasn't his fault his eyes were new. As the session proceeded, that chart surprised, claimed, named and comforted. Feelings need direct expression without being in the driver's seat. They are the passengers of our voyages and as such need to be treated with care but not full control. Words are just words without intent or tone. But what if the tone is not the intent? It can get messy. Words are magic and pain. Language is our greatest weapon and healer. "I wrestled. But it wasn't with God; it was with the ideas that obscured him." Sarah Clarkson.

Sad: "Fatigued/ Tired. Miserable. Despair. heartbroken. Devastated. Discouraged, Disappointed. Hopeless. Pain and Hurt. Depressed. Grief and Sorrow. Unhappy." Joyful: "Delighted. Glad- Pleased. Elated. Thrilled. Enthusiastic. Passionate. Appreciation. Thankful. Grateful. Excited. Ecstatic. Happy." Gratitude partially counters sadness, but it is possible to hold both. BOTH/ AND "Do I contradict myself? Very well, I contradict myself. I am large. I contain multitudes."- Walt Whitman.

Snowfall. Flakes can be fluffy, gentle and comforting or a blizzard, sharp and dangerous. The Sparkling white magnifies other colours. Sometimes it blinds. Can you feel a memory? Can loss be amplified by surrounding rushes of joy? The fresh start of a blank canvas or the bleak ending of a previous season? Both/ And? Dancing with ghosts; a gift or a curse? Both/ And? The bough of the branch, heavy with snow, has it's own sort of knowing.

Rooted. Spirit working in the body. Nourishment below the surface. The re making power of love. There are no empty promises here. Roots are the friends of wounded hearts. We become so much muchier when we can rise rooted. Stumble into the light of Grace. Close your eyes and feel the ground beneath your feet, your foundation of Being is here.

Wounded Healer. "We are not created for disaster nor formed for destruction, and to lament our pain is to honour the beauty God intended and yearn toward it's restoration....The point of our struggle is not to gain some sort of spiritual grit or prove our endurance. We are not asked to become grim warriors in the face of pain; We are asked to be children who will not rest until they know themselves cradled in the arms of a father who begot them for joy...toward hope...onward..."- Sarah Clarkson. The impacting, insightful leaders know that to be a healer, one has to first know what wounds feel like. Grief comes to us all. Each of us has different gifts to give, different ways to interpret, different faith stances, different stories. But we CAN become wounded healers in the smaller sense of the words. "We would rather God be neatly culpable for the evil that comes upon us, would rather believe that cancer and infant death and abuse and tornadoes are explainable as necessary to the overarching story of the world, than face the kind of ancient, true drama in which God himself weeps at the sight of what he has made, now defiled and destroyed. We are afraid to sit in the wild presence of sorrow, allowing it to whisper to us..."- Sarah Clarkson. Perhaps sorrow is like the candy hearts on a Gingerbread home? Melted little red streaks on the pristine white snow. Grief should not be explained away or a segue into dissertations of hell. Grief is a broken state when God weeps too.

Grace. "When strivings Cease." Because we will never, even the best of us, feel like we are enough. Someone will be better. Someone will have more. Someone will outlast and outlive. You may feel broken, but that is not all that IS you. Think of the lovely practice of filling broken tea cups with gold. The teacup doesn't fill itself. But it is a vessel for the golden glue to set. Isn't that a relief? With that knowing we can rest a bit...

Tis' The Season. Maybe it's Solstice or Eid or Hanukkah or Christmas or a Stat or just another day... December / January holds many holidays. "Happy Solstice" and "Merry Christmas" and "Happy Holidays" are words that I still can not help but pass onward. I give those I love enough credit to be able to translate the sentiment, even if they do not celebrate that particular holiday. I love the Community episodes remarking on the complexities and ridiculousness of all this. Yes, we want to give others a listening ear and respect, but we can also love what we love and be what we are. In that we become full enough to learn to hear what others love and whom they are. It's pure beauty- hearing different variations of holiday goodwill.

Cheers to Christmas tunes and the feelings of childhood they evoke. Music can transcend. "Come December I confess. I want the tree full of toys and tinsel....I want the elves in the yard, each sentimental card dripping glitter on the floor, I want a roof full of plywood reindeer and a road  full of horse drawn sleighs. All those Christmas cliches... I want the gulp and the tear the moment that I hear Andy Williams being played...Not to mention the snow, not to mention the choir. Not to mention the candles in the window and chestnuts roasting on a fire...along a street bathed in twinkling white..as for the songs you hear over and over, I hope you look this one up when it plays, all those Christmas cliches."- Darren Criss

May your Gingerbread homes reflect not only whom you want to be, but whom you already are. May you make the changes you can and apply Grace to the rest. May you find peppermint bliss and spun clouds of respite amongst any grief you may carry. But most of all, may you know, you are worthy because you exist.

Happy Holidays.

P.S.  Song Choice: Normally I don't upload private family videos on my blog but I thought my readers may enjoy a clip of our Gingerbread ridiculousness. Sometimes we send out cheesy home made videos to our friends and family. Recently we had two hours to use- thus we gathered some thrown together outfits and did a quick frolic through the song Sweet Gingerbread Man by Sammy Davis Jr. which was on the last Hawkeye episode (excellent Tv series thus far!) We were purposefully ridiculous as usual and we hope it brings you a smile…what do you think…does my husband look like David Hasselhoff with bronzer?? (His words NOT mine!) It was our only way to make a sweet gingerbread man with his halloween monk suit - ha ha. I uploaded the first minute of the video (with a few tweaks to those who already saw it.) I could not upload the full video here (I know you want more.) but the little morsel is enough to get the lyrics" All tasty and tan sweet gingerbread man" into your head. I dare you not to hum that one incessantly...just hopefully it doesn't beget the image of my husband in tights...You're welcome. Ha. Anyway, Enjoy the cheese! Happy Holidays and Merry Christmas to you. May you find some sweet moments of joy and wonder where it is possible...

The song I referenced at the end of my post is found below:
All those Christmas Cliches By Darren Criss ( I loved his new Crissmas album along with Kelly Clarkson's new Christmas record "When Christmas Comes Round again" has been on repeat in my house. How can I not feel like Christmas with the opening to her first song? Wowza. I did not realize what a power house voice she had! Songs 1- 4 &12 are my favourite!):

Kelly Clarkson Christmas Isn't Cancelled (Just You):

And for a slower song that had my eyes a little misty: Merry Christmas to the One I used to know- Kelly Clarkson:

AUTISM INTERVIEW #97 PART 1: KMARIE ON THE BENEFITS OF KNOWING YOURSELF June 4, 2019Interviewsautistic identity, identity, Kmarie, music This is the first part in a two-part interview with Kmarie @ learnfromautistics.com

I participated in a two part interview at https://learnfromautistics.com/blog/ Please check out Jenna's site as it is an excellent resource! I LOVED the interview process with her, she also edited all my words, which took the pressure off my executive functioning issues! Thanks Jenna for all the hard work you do on behalf of Autistic people and for asking me to participate.

AutIstic INTERVIEW #97 PART 1: KMARIE ON THE BENEFITS OF KNOWING YOURSELF

This is the first part in a two-part interview with Kmarie. Kmarie is an autistic wife, mother, and blogger from Canada. She is is drawn to music and often uses song lyrics to express her emotions. Her beautifully written blog details a variety of different life experiences, including (but not limited to) living with Asperger’s, INFJ personality, low ferritin, and chronic illness. This week Kmarie discussed her relationship with music, the importance of self knowledge, and her struggles with executive functioning and language.

On your About Page, you write, “I believe when we know ourselves first, we make the world a better place.” Can you expand on this?

Baruch Spinoza (one of my favourite Philosophers) wrote, “The more clearly you understand yourself and your emotions the more you become a lover of what is.” If we can not understand why we choose different ethics, emotions or responses, then it is tougher for us to understand people who are different from us. I feel, when we love what IS our life- whom we ARE, we are able to activate change because our foundation, grounded in a sense of secure self to a degree, is built. When we know our motivations and why, I think that it is easier to be compassionate about the way others are. Thus making the world a better place. When we are at peace with our own understanding of where we stand, how we are, and whom we wish to become, we add that strong, solid stance to the human collective. Perhaps it’s a bit of a Stoic mentality, but when our self is in check, understood, and balanced, we are less prone to violent rage, ignorance, and trampling of other’s basic human rights.

How do we go about “knowing” ourselves? How have you learned more about yourself? In what ways do you continue learning?

Wow, this is a big question that will have a big answer and I will still feel I am leaving things out…Feel free to skim.
There are many mediums to learn about self. Cognitive therapy, conversation, film, art, music, reading…but specifically, I feel that in-depth knowing of self can often jump off in Personality Typing. The issue with Typology is that often people answer questions with how they wish they were or how they mistakenly perceive themselves and thus get the wrong result. A wrong result is worse than no result. I often tell people they will know it is right when they read their overview and think, “How did this person crawl into my mind?” MBTI tests like Personality Hacker or 16Personalities are excellent starters. I am an INFJ. In the past, I mis-tested as an INFP, which, after reading the description, I realized I am most definitely not. INFJ described my life. The Enneagram  is another layer of self, but again, the testing is tricky. I am a 4 with a 5 wing.
There is a certain sense of “Becoming” or “Knowing” when I read a book or a test result that resonates in frequency with my soul. When I found out I had Autism/ Aspergers…that was another piece of ME. But honestly, knowing yourself DOES come with some struggles. Each time I find a new aspect of myself that resonates as true, I go through a mini identity crisis of  “Oh wow I am like that? That is something I now need to work at embracing or growing in my life.”
At first, it can be hard work…learning about personal strengths and weaknesses. Sometimes even if it feels true, it may not be wished to be true…and it requires some soul growth. I cried about my Enneagram Fourwhen I read Beatrice Chestnut ‘s book, but then I read the “Sacred Enneagram,” and even though some of my core beliefs may sightly differ, that book put my four back into some perspective… and then I found a blog by an actual Enneagram 4 that dispelled the multiple myths from writers trying to understand but not actually Fours themselves. That cleared everything up for me. I still enjoy Beatrice Chestnut’s ideas, but I take them with a self aware grain of salt. Now I am proud to be a four. But that is because I had that guidance from another actual Four type.
It is the same concept with a “professional” versus an “actual Autistic” voice. Both have value, but choose the actual Autistic voice first and foremost. It’s why it is so important that we tell our stories…even if we think they don’t matter or no one is listening. When we tell our stories, it enables others to tell theirs. But after the hard work of an initial new knowing of self, a new layer of understanding is born, and that is often when life tends to get better. Or at least, I become better within the normalities of every day living…
Oh, I am a self growth junkie. I kind of “life coach” people in my spare time so I am constantly on the lookout for new paths of knowing and learning. Currently I am reading “The Goddesses in Every Woman” and “God’s in Everyman” based on Jung Typology rooted in Greek Archetype Myths. I was blown away when I found out I was an Aphrodite and wrote a post on that. My pre-judgments going into that were challenged. I often feed my learning through regular reading of Philosophy, Psychology, Educational, and Sociology themed books. Right now I am reading, “Life through the Lens of Unschooling” by Pam Laricchia and finding myself in many of the pages. I also just finished an Alan Watts book. We are conducting a book study in our home. We also host “Called to Question Gatherings” to which we invite people who are passionate about topics to educate listeners and discuss in an openly peaceful forum of differing beliefs. We have had a lot of professors, educators, and laymen speak about topics that interest them. I firmly believe we learn more from people who are excited about their own stories.
I am constantly on the lookout for viewpoints opposite of my own to challenge any stagnant thinking I have. For instance, I heard about Jordan Peterson and his controversial book. Initially I was very against him, but after watching numerous You Tube videos of his discussions, I finally began to understand his story and where he was coming from. I read his book…I was annoyed at some parts, and disagreed with some, but I also came away with a belief that for SOME people- his book will make them better people…and for THAT specific audience- his voice matters too. Even if it is not something I would fully support, I at least respected the way he holds himself in an argument. If I feel I am becoming too conservative, I read more liberal people…and if I feel I am becoming too liberal (which is more my natural tendency), I re balance by reading a respected conservative. I always try to make sure my sources at least share a value of trying to make the world a better place or some sort of ethical platform. While I am a rebel in my own way, I am also a rule follower, so I try to find people who have that balance. I try to have a ratio of books that would be in agreement with whom I am, but also that require me to do outside the box thinking. As Baruch Spinoza writes, “No matter how thinly you slice it, there will always be two sides.”

You recently wrote a blog post about increasing executive functioning and language difficulties you experience. How does this impact your relationship/interactions with your husband and children? Are there ways they can support you during these times?

It has been hard. It is taking me longer to process. Normally I am a rapid processor. I can read a book easily in a sitting, but it’s been taking me a bit more time lately. Getting my thoughts out in real life, as opposed to writing on a page, has always been more challenging, but now, to my horror, it is translating to paper/typing too. I admit I have been in panic mode lately, and I am trying to use the time I do have with more accuracy to advocate for myself, with my children and husband. Plus, I want them to have the skill set to navigate deterioration or different paths of communicating when/if it happens to them. So the times I am more cognizant, I have been reading them posts of others this has happened to, I try to explain, I try to give them an understanding of the brain, nutrients, what is possible to control and what is not… But then there are the moments when I have no words and I get frustrated easily. Honestly, I am still learning to navigate this with them. Most of this year I have felt like a massive failure.
I home school my children, so I do need a certain level of communication to keep them up in their studies. Our facilitator just came and was happy with their progress, but I couldn’t shake the failure pit of despair in my gut. Deep down I know though that I am resilient and loved…and we can work with whatever life throws at us with enough hutzpah. Basically I am stubborn in believing in my worth and contributions overall because it has been a life long fight of mine.
They have naturally helped me by giving me words. Luckily, I am so in tune with my husband and children, they often know what I want without me saying much. Over a decade with chronic illness with spurts of pain so bad I cannot speak has given us practice in this situation. My daughter knows with my facial expressions generally what I want. We have an almost made-up language of gestures, expressions and grunts etc. She brilliantly figured out that often when I am in “the zone” and they try everything to get my attention and I just can’t give it, all she has to do is gently stroke her finger down my cheek or stroke my hair and immediately I pay attention. My husband never figured that out…he always tries to talk louder or suddenly sits beside me or uses shock effect, and that won’t get my attention. I may startle, but I won’t be focused. I appreciate my daughter figuring that out. I thought I hated most forms of unexpected touch, but I appreciate when she does that.
My husband luckily has the best sense of humour. He is also generally a natural care taker. So when I mess up my words, he does often laugh, but it doesn’t bother me because it is in an enjoyment way…he loves my interesting speech slurs, word and phrase mix ups, and the way I speak. But he is pained for me if it is getting in the way of my life. I now often look to him in a conversation, and he knows he is supposed to jump in to supply the words I need to make my point. He never takes over though if I am struggling through, but I wish to continue. He generally has worked out cues with me to know when I want support and when I do not.
I really struggle if I am in a flow state and get interrupted. Often my words won’t come back and I can become frustrated for the rest of the day. My family is learning not to interrupt when I am in a monologue.
I have never been able to express some of my emotions without typing or writing…so when I am mad at my husband, he knows by the songs I play. He also tends to know my mood by the music I choose. Music is a massive form of communication in our home. Often, even though it is important to me, I forget to use it. So they all work as a team to make sure I have access to music or remind me that I haven’t listened to any in awhile. It’s like drinking water. Yesterday I became so dizzy and nauseous to the point of curling up in a ball for an hour. My youngest came in and said, “Mom I don’t think I saw you take one sip of water since you woke up.” I thought about it, and he was right! I was swiftly brought two cups of water and half an hour later, I was fine. My family views music as important as water in another way. It is communication, so accessibility to it and reminders for it are part of our day.

You often use song lyrics and music to communicate your feelings. Describe your relationship with music. Have you always been drawn to music?

Music is my life. I don’t feel I could fully function or feel fully human without music. As a little child, I would grab the microphone and sing 80’s rock and roll at the top of my lungs. 70’s and 80’s rock is still what I need if I require an energy burst of happiness. In the crucial moments of my life, the right song has come along to describe my journey. I also can’t seem to cry often unless I have a song to trigger me when I need to. I have to go to songs for those moments like Celine Dion’s “Fly.” I have a song for everything basically. Before iTunes and the Internet, I would know songs from every genre and educate my friends in all of them. I constantly made mix tapes and then burned CDs to express my friendship to people. I communicated my care, and I still send song lyrics via text to my friends. I also love introducing people to new songs. Lyrics are first and foremost my way of speaking. Even in my ordinary day to day speech, those who know many songs will hear lyrics sprinkled throughout.
I can’t listen to classical much. I find music without lyrics really stressful. It’s fine if it’s background for a movie, but not playing on the speakers. My husband loves classical, and I will tolerate it for awhile before I put on headphones or beg him to put on ANYTHING else with lyrics. Every genre fills a need for me. I am also seasonal in my music needs. For some reason I crave country in the Spring or when I want to celebrate simplicity. I love Jazz and Easy Listening leading up to Christmas. Rock ‘n’ Roll, Broadway, Pop, Metal, Show tunes, Opera, Punk, Indie etc…it all has its place. I like everything except for Screamo and most Classical. Although I am grateful to Classical for getting us to where we are today and there are MANY beautiful pieces. I just need lyrics to ground me.
Music is part of my soul. I would literally be lost without it. I have a soundtrack playing inside my head for every moment. It expresses a part of me I can’t seem to access otherwise. That’s why the show ‘Glee’ was and is still important to me. Most people don’t get that. I still watch later episodes of Glee when I’m on the treadmill or if I’m having a tough time or if I need to express something. Glee combined all of my interests and obsessions; film, music, movie, artists, self growth, friendship and connection. It did so in a way that was both irreverent and satirical to all subjects and paradoxically respectful and acknowledging. But first and foremost, it expressed the inner energy I have inside. In it I found my voice once again.
When I first found out about my Asperger‘s diagnosis, I was also introduced to the Broadway musical Wicked. Broadway and film have been huge aspects of my life almost as much as music. As a child I would longingly wish to escape into the 1940’s films. Singing in the Rain, etc. When I found out I was Autistic, the role of Elphaba in Wicked really made me feel less alone. I would play ‘Defying Gravity’ in tears over and over again. My husband knows every lyric due to my continuing obsession and repetitive listening. It helped me navigate the two years I was still finding myself within my diagnosis.

KMarie often selects song lyrics at the end of her posts. Below are her choices for this interview:
This link is by Kodi Lee who is blind and autistic and just won the golden buzzer on America’s Got Talent. His relationship with music and his mom had me sobbing. The way he uses music as his life – I can relate.

Also Me by Taylor Swift because each Autistic person deserves to feel that “I’m the only one of me – and baby that’s the fun of me.”

INFJ. The Many Contradictions, Ironies, Dualities, and Paradoxes of the INFJ Personality Type. The Strengths and Weaknesses of INFJ's. Breaking down the Contradictions in Each Letter of I. N.F.J.

*NOTE: As I have mentioned before in posts, personality is ONE aspect of being human and your individual make up. Environment, upbringing, birth, health, trauma, life experience, mental or cognitive differences, genetics, beliefs, gender preferences, country of origin....there are so many aspects that make up YOU. However, I firmly believe finding your accurate personality helps you understand more of yourself and how you work. Take a free test HERE: http://www.16personalities.com - or sign up with an email and take test here http://www.personalityhacker.com/genius-personality-test/ (this site has amazing insight, podcasts and videos.) The key is to answer as you ARE and not as you would want to be like. Meyers Briggs/ Keirsey is what the 16 personalities is based on and has research behind it for a reason. It is more of a descriptor of what you value and how you work out of the world in regards to communication and relationships. I am speaking with authority about INFJ because I am one. However, I make sure I am also reading up on all of the other types and I listen to every single Personality Hacker. Understanding more than just your type is key but writing about YOUR type can help the world. I encourage you, if you are not an INFJ, to write about your type and feel free to link it in the comments, as we need more personal stories on other types out there:) **

The Duality- Caught Between Logic and Feeling:
A phrase in Fun's song, "We are Young" croons, "Tonight we are young, so let's set the world on fire, We can burn brighter, than the sun." I love this song. But each time I hear that line, even after years of it being on my favourites playlist, I am plagued with my duality of thought. On one hand I think, "YES!! Let's burn bright." Then I proceed to picture myself running with those I love, in the perfect outfit, and dancing in the honeyed hue of just before twilight, smiling as the song bursts from all of our mouths in unison. My heart speeds up in anticipation of doing something youthful and memorable. The other part of me wishes to warn everyone I know that burning brighter than the sun does not have to be a magnificent, epic, Hollywood gesture. It can be as simple as a sick person resting into their convalescing season, or a depressed soul managing to brush their teeth, or a parent basking in the delight of their children's milestone...setting the world on fire varies depending on the moment and what one is capable of. My heart slows down with the logical realization that I am already burning bright by being who I am. But then I get caught up in the rest of the song which means singing loudly and feeling the urge to do something spontaneous and loud, while many other thoughts carousel in my mind.

See what happens to my INFJ brain with ONE sentence of song lyrics? I am torn into my two opposing sides, both of which the thoughts play in my brain simultaneously, of rational thinking, and epic romance. I think this is part of the reason why the TV series Glee spoke to me and is still my 'feel good/ go to show' when I am struggling or needing inspiration. Most INFJ's may not feel the same way, because my experience is based on upbringing, but hang in here with me, while I explain why this brings home an example of INFJ thinking.

A Glee Example:
Glee (Seasons 1.5 - 3- My favourite character and the meaningful storylines that hit harder for me do not come until Blaine enters the picture in 2.6.) brought to life all the music, movies, film, and dance numbers I grew up on and was obsessed with and combined it with hard hitting issues (as the series progressed) of acceptance, teen pregnancy, bullying, abuse, being a minority, religion, hypocrisy, drugs, suicide, alcohol, sex, commitment, texting and driving, inequality, ableism, and many other worthy themes. Ironically, sometimes it was done in a sacrilegious or sarcastic tone. Sometimes it was harsh with the material and other times incredibly gentle. All mental conditions or minority stances spoken on the show, were given both respect and awareness, yet also dark jokes and mean spirited comments, which equalized many disabilities, differences, and mental illness with both a dark and light approach. All were up for defending and also up to the same treatment. This is what INFJ's often will encompass- a sense of darkness and light, or seriousness in a funny situation or laughter in a serious situation. (Although many INFJ's could be adverse to Glee:) We have a dark sense of humour and can laugh at seemingly cruel things if presented in a certain harmless way, yet we are compassionately engaged with the innocence of difference and often will be found fighting for the underdogs.
Many INFJ's who did not grow up like I did, may not enjoy Glee. Glee did not always make sense from the week to week standpoint. The writing wasn't fluid from show to show. As I watch the episodes post production, I can appreciate that aspect now, knowing that my expectations have already been disappointed in some cases and exceeded in others. Episodes that used to bother me, I can now enjoy. Some episodes I still skip over entirely but it doesn't really matter in the end. Some episodes I watch for the singing, and others I watch for the overarching theme of the week and skip some songs. It appeals to my hopeless romantic and unrealistic side and indulges it...because often the side I choose to live in the day to day is my logical realistic one. Yet, it also pulls the heart strings with it's episodic lessons or real world issues.
Glee is morally and ethically complex. If it doesn't trigger or bother a person in one episode, it will most likely do so at least once a season. At the same time, viewers who stick with it into later seasons, will also find that this same triggering aspect can happen for comfort and feelings of belonging. This is most likely, the experience most people have being friends with an INFJ. We can be challenging and comforting simultaneously. INFJ's can push the envelope simply by being ourselves. There are comforting segments of Glee, that have made my mostly Glee disliking husband leak a few tears, because he is deeply touched, when I force him to sit and watch. This complex duality is like my INFJ soul. "I'm an odd combination of 'really sweet' and 'don't mess with me.'"

INFJ Contradictions- No Better Friend- No Worse Enemy:
As INFJ's we are capable of making a person feel the most understood, but we can also tear that same person down with our words of insight, if we decide to use them as weapons instead of soothing balms. This contradiction can confuse those around us. We can be mushy and tough all at once. Atticus wrote, "She wore a smile like a loaded gun." This applies to an INFJ woman. We make loyal and life changing friends, to the people we actually allow to come close enough to our inner realms of friendships, but we can also be formidable enemies.

Although it takes a lot to push us to enemy status of which I wrote about HERE. INFJ's are capable of whirling through anger and leaving behind a bit of devastation they deeply regret later. This can especially happen if triggered by ignorance and lack of compassion. Conflict and criticism can drive us to the brink of annoyed crazy. My husband has a habit of being a pot stirrer. He can thrive off of conflict and I have had to tone down my balking reaction to this aspect of his ENFP soul. He has also had to learn to tone down his conflict seeking adventures when I am around. We balance each other out on most days but sometimes our differences ignite sparks. He is also quite the pessimist despite his bubbly persona and he can criticize in reckless abandon when he wishes. I seem serious and sometimes brooding, but surprisingly cling to optimism when it comes to the priorities nearest to my heart and belief in the world. Nothing will make me more irritated than constant criticism or idle gossip (luckily he is NOT an idle gossip.) If I hear more than three criticisms in an hour I will start snapping at him. And then, ironically, if this continues to happen for more than half a day, I will turn my irritation on HIM and criticize him with soulless detail. It never ends well. "INFJ no better friend, no worse enemy."

Luckily, to counter balance this hidden sinister darkness inside, INFJ's have epic levels of self control. This control is usually checked from learning the hard way in our past, that our zinging perceptions, when targeted, can cause us more pain in the end then we bargained for. INFJ's can usually refrain from and harness our capability of ripping the soul out of our victim with our insight filled words. If we do give in to our anger, usually we are not relieved later, and feel awful for losing control and inflicting pain. We are at our best when life is in harmony, including our interactions. We probably relive and reopen the wounds more than most of our victims of temper, for years later, into the late hours of the night...this applies even to the times when the anger was justified. I work on this factor of myself with appropriate boundaries.

INFJ and Boundaries:
Boundaries are deeply needed for INFJ's. Usually we are not very good at them until we practice, practice, practice. We also often have to learn to accept what Brene Brown coined, "Our shame stories." We are hard on ourselves sometimes, even if it seems that INFJ's are full of themselves...We just know ourselves and our gifts. There is the flip side and we have the other side that needs a lot of work. We can seem to have insight into all other people but ourselves at times. It's a character trait that demands growth for the INFJ's. Two books that helped me on this subject were "The Gifts of Imperfection" by Brene Brown and "Necessary Endings" by Henry Cloud Townsend. (Links can be found in my Library.)

Our paradoxes also reach into our intelligence. We love to research, intuitively seek out information, and build up our resources. Yet, the more we become informed, the less we fit in. Already we feel the contradicting frustration of society not understanding us, yet loving that we are unique enough to rarely be understood. We both love and hate our own contradictions. Our lives are enhanced and disenchanted by our own duplicity. Our desire to be well informed is also at odds (like the cartoon expresses below) with our 'desire to remain sane.' We are so contradictory to most of society, that the more we engage in controversial or outside the box thinking, the more alien we feel.

Aldous Huxley wrote," The more powerful and original a mind, the more it will incline to the religion of solitude." This rings true for INFJ's and INTJ's although, I disagree with the quote applying to all of humanity. While it is true that solitude takes out the influences of the dumb, zombie mass mentality factor, there have been MANY brilliant original and powerful minds that have also been Extroverts. To not factor this in, would be pretentious and discriminatory to those who get energy hits off of other people (Extroverts.)

INFJ's tend to LIVE the Matrix. That show never shattered my reality or was mind blowing to me, because I already felt that way about life. I've always rebelled at the nature of normality. I don't understand why Alice went home after Wonderland. Yet, I still have to BE in this world, so some information or thought processes, I have to smother to stay sane, in the place I am supposed to be alive in. I possess a stubborn quality simply because I was born into a life that requires a participation level I think is ridiculous.

Every personality type feels that they are a paradox sometimes, but INFJ's particularly feel like they ARE the living paradox. Even within our Introversion, iNtuitive, Feeling, and Judging explanations, we encompass opposing traits.

I= Introversion. INFJ is the most Introverted type though often Ironically Mistaken as Extrovert:

Our Introversion is counterbalanced by our sometimes outgoing nature. We are often mistaken for Extroverts even if we are one of the types that craves hermit status the most. We ironically treat people the way we want to be treated and we don't make small talk with them. We are drawn to humanity...when we do not have to engage with the masses. We think about people ALL the time; dissecting, analyzing, observing, understanding and wishing to make the world a better place without being noticed too much. Yet, as soon as we are around a bunch of people, our inner Loki comes out. I can see how Loki, the god of mischief in Norse mythology, became so intent on ruling...his twisted burden of purpose is an example of the rare case of INFJ evil that COULD happen, if we don't use our superpowers for good. I think most INFJ's would agree with the statement to humanity that, "The bright lure of freedom diminishes your life's joy in a mad scramble for power, identity."- Loki. How INFJ's come to terms with this realization pushes us either deeper into the shadows or a step into the brighter light.

N= Intuitive. INFJ's Can SEEM sensory...but we are all in our head...

Our sensory aspect is so underdeveloped that we can seem highly sensory. The Intuitive letter is always our highest scoring description. We are definitely N's, however, our moderation demands our attention. We have to practice the middle ground. I have always been a person of extremes. I sleep way too much to counter balance my insomniac life. I work faster and harder than my husband at times and then lazily contend with the best couch potato for days of inactivity. I feel everything or nothing. I fall hard or resist to the proverbial death. Our Sensory is our three year old process and often our downfall.
Our F acts more like a T:

We are often logical even though our feeling quotient is high. We make our decisions based on logic but we are extroverted feeling with the interactions of the world. See THIS functional stack for more details in this regard. We empathize deeply but with an analytical approach. It's a cold feeling rationality that other feelers do not fully get. Actually, almost all personality types, other than our fellow INTJ's, don't understand this logical rational quality combined with our feeling status. We layer our coldness with warmth which the thinkers (T's) can not fully relate to either.

J= Planned flexibility:
Our Judging quality can often come across as a Perceiving type. We have moments of adaptability and spontaneity that some Perceivers can't even understand. My husband knows I like to plan everything. Truthfully, even my spontaneity is planned, in the sense that I have thought the whole spontaneous event quickly through with it's benefits and consequences, and I am ready to quickly switch gears. I can procrastinate longer than my ENFP husband, when I get in the mood, which is saying a lot.

Interacting with the Types that Understand Us Most:

No wonder people get confused by INFJ's. INFP's feel we are too contradictory or fluctuating based on context, which often will conflict with their sense of authenticity. Yet, out of all the types, they often relate to us the most. INTJ's get our future orientated thinking and intuitive perspectives, but our feeling aspect throws them for a loop at times or seems wishy washy... ENFJ's our are sister types but are way kinder than us. ENFJ's have our backs. We connect with ENFJ's on our planning J features and also our harmony co pilot which we both fiercely protect. Both ENFJ and INFJ types get annoyed by conflict. ENFP's are often our better halves. They bring out our balance and we bring out theirs. Truthfully, any personality type can get along with another or understand to a point, but these types tend to get an INFJ more within these aspects.

INFJ Trust Issues, Detectives of Lies, Observing Details:

Unfortunately, INFJ's also tend to notice what people don't want noticed. We notice the inner unspoken details, the hypocrisy, and the lies.

Especially the lies. The picture below expresses this well. "INFJ -when you know someone is lying but you just sit there and let them talk." And then proceed to allow them to carry on their lie for the rest of their lives if they wish, because you understand why they are lying and also understand the freedom of portrayal and speech. With the exception of the times when these lies are causing harm to others...and even then, the INFJ will go about exposing these lies behind the scenes, with calculated timing...but they KNOW. Oh they know...except for the rare time that their naiveté clouds perception. However, usually this is discovered down the line because it's also unlikely an INFJ is mislead for long, due to gut intuition. The one type that is often able to confuse an INFJ the most, is our polar opposite...ESTP's can foil our sense of stability like no other...

INFJ's Seem to be an Open Book but are Full of Closed Doors. The Layers of an INFJ:

Our contradictions also bleed into how others perceive us. INFJ's can seem like an open book full of information, and private details given with careless abandon. Certain personality types do not even speak about topics in such depth in one lifetime, that we do in one week. That is just the tip of the ice burg of thought for an INFJ. It's both a curse and a gift. Our minds are constantly swirling with information. We are continually changing and dedicated to personal growth. Which means it is rare that information yesterday is completely relevant for our tomorrows. We have layers of intimacy and layers of privacy that most do not understand. INFJ's implement weird rules for sharing. We are picky about which platforms we share on and which we completely ignore. It is different for each INFJ although, often we are attracted to similar platforms. Most INFJ's love blogging and pinning personality pins on Pinterest. The same rules we apply on social forums can apply to people. We share certain aspects of ourselves with certain types. Who we are depends heavily on context. People think they know us well from reading or witnessing a passionate speech, hearing our whispered confession in consolatory moments, or because of the rate and depth of information we share, but most people do not truly know or understand our inner workings. Even when we give them the key.

Craig Thompson wrote, "You have so many layers, that you can peel away a few and everyone is so shocked or impressed that you are baring your soul, while to you it's nothing, because you know you've got at least twenty more layers to go."  My husband can still be surprised by my actions or nuances of being, even though I give him the running monologue on my inner workings daily. My best friend and I STILL have interesting and engaging conversations about new thoughts, patterns or insights after thirteen years of speaking an average of five hours a week on the phone. Many people in the past assumed they knew me because I handed them little bits of information to understand, at a small capacity or because I felt I owed them at least some sort of explanation. The fact is, INFJ's understand contradictions so well, that we can change our minds in an instant. What once applied in one circumstance, does not apply to us in another. Many people see this as uncommitted, selfish, or inauthentic, but we are extremely authentic individuals dedicated to the selfless act of context within a committed moment.

We COULD win arguments, and we know this to the depth of our core, but we know that the complexity in which our arguments hold up our not worth the time of our opponents. They would have to know all the research, thought and perspectives we have spent decades thinking upon and honing in on to understand, thus we usually stay quiet, smile and nod, or just utter, "agree to disagree" or "Oh that could make sense" with a polite tone. To our friends, we will give a little bit more, but still we do not go into the wealthy amounts of information because we do not wish to waste their time with thoughts that are not theirs to engage with, in the first place...we can open doors but we do not wish to start new worlds for people. Their job is to walk through the door and create their own worlds.

Weak Sensory Issues:

We can also look very incapable. Our sensory aspect is often so underdeveloped that we can become mute, silly phrased individuals in a sensory environment. Our superpowers go undercover and we are left with all of our incapabilities, to which there are many, at the same intense degree of our gifts. Just like our gifts can seem larger than life, our weaknesses also are.
INFJ's are also intensely sexual, but based on depth of connection, because of our sensory overload factor. For once sensory overload is used for good in intimate circumstances. We like physical affection but on our terms. INFJ's can seem touchy but we dislike casual hugs or touch. The same way we dislike chit chat. It feels cheap to us, even if we understand that to other personalities it is highly valuable. We engage for the sake of others we care about, but in general we are a walking contradiction when it comes to intimacy and the ground rules apply, once again, based on circumstance. For instance, I adore hugs from my children and snuggles, but if they approach me in an in depth/ thought moment I may lightly push them away.

 INFJ's are constantly torn.

We wouldn't have it any other way but sometimes this brings us more pain in life. Like the meme expresses below;
"The INFJ thought process. Ni: I want to find the one true answer....Fe....in a way that maintains general harmony... Ti: without swaying too much from what feels logical... Se: while trying not to completely miss what is going on right now."

Yup.

"INFJ If I am silent, it's because there's thunder inside me. Or I'm just chilling, It depends. May the odds be ever in your favour." As Meredith Brooks sings, "I'm a little bit of everything all rolled into one..." and "I hate the world today...I'm your hell, I'm your dream. I'm nothing in between...you know you wouldn't want it any other way... Just when you think, You've got me, figured out, the seasons already changing...Tomorrow I may change and today won't mean a thing..." But for the record, today, while it is happening, matters to us. We feel the moment even if we are distracted by our ever intrusive thoughts. We may be future orientated, but we also strive to be in the moment, when we can, embracing life. Another paradox.

A post about INFJ Boundaries:

I wrote a post based on the insights of Michael Pierce's video on INFJ and include many of his quotes from the video segment here: http://worldwecreate.blogspot.ca/2016/10/infj-michael-pierce-video-segment.html

I also LOVED this site and found every word accurate: http://personalityjunkie.com/the-infj/ and this one: http://infjunraveled.tumblr.com

Personality hacker has podcasts and videos on each type. Here is a few of their INFJ links:

Song choice: I love this version of Girls Just Wanna Have Fun on Glee because the way it is done is kind of like an INFJ soul...contradictions between lyrics and music yet aptly accurate:

My daughter also said I had to add this song because it reminds her of me. LOL.:

and because I referenced " We are Young" in the first part of the post...I prefer this version over Fun's actually, which is rare for me to prefer the copy over original...
